How the random KJV verse generator works

Random Bible is a free random Bible verse generator. Curated by default, everything on request

There are 31,102 verses in the Bible, and a generator that draws from all of them hands you a genealogy or the measurements of a temple wall more often than anything you can pray with. That is a good way to read the Bible at random. It is a poor way to find a verse when you want one now.

So the draw starts from a hand-picked pool: verses gathered under topics like peace, hope, strength, comfort, anxiety, grief and healing. Each one earned its place by still making sense pulled out of its chapter, which a lot of verses do not.

For a draw with nothing held back, set Draw from to Every verse (31,102). It reads straight out of the 1,189 chapters of the King James Version, genealogies and temple measurements included, and whatever comes up opens in the reader where it sits. To read straight through instead, start from the books of the Bible in order.

Narrow the draw: Psalms, the Gospels, either testament

“Give me a verse” and “give me a Psalm” aren't the same request. The Draw fromselector handles the second one. Leave it on the whole Bible, or set it to Psalms and every tap returns a Psalm, which is what most people mean by a random Psalm generator. Gospels narrows the draw to Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. New Testament and Old Testament split the canon in half.

There's no per-book setting, and that's deliberate. Most single books don't hold enough encouraging verses to keep from repeating after three or four taps. Psalms, the Gospels and each testament are all big enough that they don't.

Three public-domain translations, side by side

The default is the King James Version, the wording most English verses are remembered in. Its English is 400 years old, though, so two modern alternatives sit in the same selector: the World English Bible (WEB) and theAmerican Standard Version (ASV). All three are in the public domain, which is why they can be shown here in full, copied freely, and printed without permission.

Switching the selector re-words the verse and takes the old wording with it. To read two at once, open In other translations under the buttons. The verse on screen appears in the two you are not reading, which is where you see a 1611 sentence and a modern one part company.

What people do with a verse once they have one

Copy it into a journal or a message to a friend. Share it as an image: one tap renders the verse onto a card sized for Instagram or a text message. Keep it in front of you as a lock screen or a desktop background.

Or follow it back into its chapter. Most verses link through to the passage around them, which is usually where the verse starts to make proper sense. And if you run a church site, the widget puts a fresh verse on it for free.
